Static site

A static site is pre-built ahead of time and doesn't pull content from a database on every load. Pages load fast and the platform is light to maintain, since there's no heavy CMS running behind it.

Why speed and security improve

Without a CMS that constantly needs patching running behind the site, there are fewer points an attacker could target, and load times drop. Google also favours fast sites in search rankings.

What it means in practice

Content updates go through code rather than an admin panel like WordPress's. It suits sites whose content changes rarely, such as a small business brochure site.
