Content management system

A content management system (CMS) is software (e.g. WordPress) where content is edited through an admin panel without needing to code. Useful for content that changes often, but it requires ongoing maintenance.

Also known as: CMS, Publishing system, WordPress

Benefits

The business owner can update text and images without contacting a developer. It suits a site with a lot of content, such as a blog that's updated regularly.

Drawbacks

The system and its plugins need regular security updates. Without them the site is more exposed to attacks, and skipped updates are the most common reason small business sites get hacked.
