Meta description

A meta description is the short text that appears under the title in Google's search results. It doesn't directly affect ranking, but it often affects whether a searcher clicks the result.

Also known as: Search result description

Why it's worth writing by hand

If no meta description is set, Google pulls text automatically from the page content, which often looks disjointed or off-topic. A hand-written description states clearly what the page offers.

What a good meta description includes

Around 150–160 characters and a concrete, accurate description of what the page offers, such as a price or location.
